Education

Susan Scott has a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and an MBA from Suffolk University, Boston. Her professional certifications include Certified Purchasing Manager (NAPM) and Certified in Integrated Resource Management (APICS).

General Experience

Ms. Scott specializes in the areas of supply management, quality, and global business. Clients include United Technologies, Bose, the Federal Transit Administration, the New York City Housing Authority, Tri-State Transmission and Generation, FleetBoston, and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Prior to her consulting experience, Ms. Scott worked for several international companies in the medical and footwear industries, in the roles of buyer-planner, quality inspector, purchasing manager and hazardous waste coordinator.

As a corporate manager at Genzyme Surgical Products she was a team member for MRPII implementation, ISO 9001 certification, and production re-locations. Her achievements include annual contributions to corporate cost savings objectives through supply chain re-engineering, process improvements, and value analysis. She also instituted Supplier Performance measurement system for key suppliers and she was responsible for supplier audits and enforcement of FDA regulations for component suppliers worldwide. While at Genzyme Surgical she co-developed the Continuous Improvement Institute to train employees in product quality and functionality, quality tools, and teamwork.

As corporate buyer for New Balance Athletic Shoe Company, and later Stride Rite Corporation, her function included worldwide sourcing of raw materials, supplier quality control, cost containment and hazardous waste management. She worked closely with component manufacturers in Italy, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, Indonesia and Spain to develop quality improvement plans that would meet production and quality standards. She also conducted work-force training sessions and led quality circles.

Ms. Scott speaks three languages: English, French, and German.

Training Experience

Ms. Scott has led seminars in Supplier Quality Management for the Boston chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management. She has taught seminars on Supplier Certification and Basic Procurement for the American Management Association. United Technologies hired Ms. Scott to work with employees on the integration of Environmental Health and Safety standards in supplier selection. She has trained numerous employees of Genzyme Surgical Products and their suppliers in product use and construction, as well as procedures to comply with ISO 9001. She has spoken at the American Society of Quality’s Conference on supplier quality ownership and she has also developed self-training curricula for Otis Elevator on Cost/Price Analysis and Value Analysis.

Consulting

Ms. Scott has done consulting work for Fleet Bank and for the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. She has assisted Teradyne Inc., an electronics testing equipment manufacturer, with several supplier audits. She has audited transit authorities for the FTA and conducted agency audits for the District of Columbia’s Financial Responsibility Authority (DCFRA). Ms. Scott has worked with a local hospital to improve its inventory management system for greater customer responsiveness with lower carrying costs. She assisted the Signal Mountain Cement Company in formulating a supplier quality certification plan for its plant in Tennessee.

Ms. Scott has written several articles on quality for various corporate newsletters and has authored articles on global business published in NAPM's Purchasing Today.
